A MAJOR infrastructure project covering almost 25% of Queensland with the potential to become one of the largest transmission networks in Australia will be presented to the states resource and construction supply chain in Gladstone.
The RAPAD Power Grid project strategically located between the industrial and energy hub of Gladstone and the critical mineral and renewable energy corridor between Townsville and the North West Minerals Province, comprises of a HVDC transmission network with the potential for solar generation, wind generation and common user battery storage.
Connecting Industry Managing Director Kieran Moran said the proposed project covers seven local government areas creating a loop between Hughenden, Barcaldine, and Gladstone including the home to the emerging Barcaldine Renewable Energy Zone (BREZ).
“The RAPAD Power Grid region is strategically located from Gladstone and the critical mineral and renewable energy corridor between Townsville and is focused on supporting the transition of Queensland to a green industrial superpower,” Mr Moran said.
The RAPAD Power Grid is a unique community-led energy infrastructure development project through a collaboration agreement between the Remote Area Planning and Development Board (RAPAD), the Barcaldine Regional Council, and Queensland-owned VisIR Pty Ltd.
“VisIR was the owner of the $5 billion CopperString transmission network project until March 2023 when the Queensland Government committed to construct the transmission network and VisIR transferred the project to State ownership.
“The company are now proposing the RAPID Power Grid with significant support from local and state government. If successful, the project will support numerous of renewable energy projects along the transmission grid, create thousands of jobs, including major work and procurement opportunities for the resource and construction supply chain.”
