PRESENTING Company

RAPAD Power Grid is a unique community-led energy infrastructure development project through a collaboration agreement between RAPAD (Remote Area Planning and Development Board), Barcaldine Regional Council, and Queensland-owned VisIR Pty Ltd. RAPAD (Remote Area Planning and Development Board) represents seven local government areas that span almost 25% of Queensland including the Barcaldine region which is home to the emerging Barcaldine Renewable Energy Zone (BREZ).

The RAPAD Power Grid region is strategically located between the industrial and energy hub of Gladstone and the critical mineral and renewable energy corridor between Townsville and the North West Minerals Province (NWMP) and utilises this strategic arc from Hughenden to Barcaldine and on to Gladstone. The RAPAD Power Grid is focused on supporting the transition of Queensland to a green industrial superpower.

The RAPAD Power Grid project comprises of HVDC transmission network (5.2 GW capacity) with the potential for solar generation (4.2 GW), wind generation (estimated at 2.5 GW) and common user battery storage. The Hughenden, Barcaldine, Gladstone loop improves geographic diversity of generation, grid flexibility and reduced biodiversity impacts. The HVDC network provides significantly improved grid stability, and the project dramatically reduces the risk of not achieving decarbonisation targets.

VisIR’s 18-year track record is unique; it sits at the intersection of the political economy and electricity infrastructure development and is built on creating industry-leading advisory firms, strategic investments and projects. The company provides flexible and creative thinking, coupled with a broad and valuable relationship ecosystem from community and political leaders to industrial businesses, electricity industry businesses and capital providers.

VisIR was the owner of the $5 billion CopperString transmission network project until March 2023 when the Queensland Government committed to construct the transmission network and VisIR transferred the project to State ownership. The team of technical, regulatory and financial professionals is led by founders, John and Joseph O’Brien, prominent energy industry experts who have been contributing to the Queensland and national energy industry for over 40 years.
